Julia has called Vancouver, Canada home for many years now, and while she loves to venture out into the world, Vancouver will always be where she returns. Vancouver is a port city on the mainland of British Columbia, Canada. Vancouver consistently ranks as a top city in the world for livability and quality of living. Julia’s favorite aspect of Vancouver is its access to nature. Vancouver lies within close proximity to mountains, oceans, lakes, and rivers. It is important for Julia to maintain this connection with nature and the outdoors. According to Julia, this is a large part of her inspiration when creating.

Although Julia Sotnykova is familiar with many mediums, styles, and techniques the way that she currently earn her keep in the world as an artist is through graphic design. There’s something so alluringly magical about being able to use computers to create and enhance artwork. Julia first got into art by drawing and sketching as a child. Eventually, Julia honed her craft at art school, and today has lent her designs to a variety of clients.

Julia Sotnykova: Drawings and Sketches

Some drawings and sketches I’ve been working on.

Julia Sotnykova enjoys traveling the world and skiing whenever possible. What began as childhood hobbies blossomed into a significant part of Julia’s life. It also helps that Vancouver is a great location for skiing and snowboarding. Julia was given her first opportunity to ski at the age of 7 and has been in love with it ever since. Despite the dreaded learning curve, she stuck to it and has never looked back.

World Travel

Much like her passion for skiing, Julia Sotnykova’s passion for world travel started at an early age. A small road trip to Seattle, Washington blossomed into life-long hobby, as Julia would grow up seeking out trips to destinations near and far. Julia has traveled to several countries, including:

  • Paris, France
  • London, England
  • Vienna, Austria
  • Barcelona, Spain
  • New York, New York
  • Sydney, Australia
  • Zurich, Switzerland
  • Montreal, Canada

Travel for Julia Sotnykova is more than just a way to draw inspiration for her art; it is an opportunity to thoroughly capture the essence of her surroundings. Wherever Julia visits, she is sure to take her camera. For instance, years ago Julia traveled across Europe. She visited many sites including Lake Lugano in Switzerland. Looking at her photos, you get a sense of the Mediterranean repose of this Switzerland town. You see palm trees, historical buildings, round ancient mountains looming in the distance, and of course, Lake Lugano.

North American Travel

But don’t let Julia’s time spent across the ocean make you think she’s disdainful of her North American roots. Julia is enamored of the great expanse of the continent and frequently travels across Canada and the United States. In fact, in the past 5 years, Julia has made dedicated effort to better explore the United States, visiting everywhere from San Francisco, to Colorado, to Washington D.C. and New York.

 Emanations from Vancouver

Part ethnographic poetry, part photography, part graphic design. Julia Sotnykova’s “Emanations” is the culmination of her whole life in Vancouver and the experiences that she’s had therein.

Julia Sotnykova spent the majority of her life in Vancouver, so it’s only natural that the city and the surrounding region should play such a large role in her life. She grew up exploring the likes of Queen Elizabeth Park with her family. She would often travel with paper and pencil or pastel in hand, smudging her surroundings. It’s in Vancouver that Julia learned to draw inspiration from her surroundings–a passion that she has carried with her throughout here life.
